|Austin, 2 hours old|
We have a beautiful, healthy grandson, born last Saturday, January 22, 2011. We weren't expecting him for another week, maybe two, but he surprised us all. He announced his impending arrival in the week hours of Saturday morning, and entered the world with a healthy wail not much more than twelve hours later. He's a bitty baby, 18.75 inches long and 6 pounds 9 ounces. Sometimes he looks like his father (like in the picture above), sometimes he looks like his mother and his grandfather.
I had finished the two blankets I was knitting for him, Anne Hanson's Cradle Me and Jared Flood's Shale Baby Blanket. Cradle me had been finished for about a month, and Shale was finished only three days before Austin's arrival, however, neither blanket had been blocked! Raechel called us at around 10am to let us know she was in labor and had been at the hospital for a few hours, Austin was born at 4:31pm...and in the interim, I was in a frenzy of soakenblocken. Since Cradle Me was knit with a washable yarn, I gave it a quick wash on the gentle cycle then dried. It came out perfectly! Shale, which is a bigger blanket and knit of Brown Sheep Nature Spun wool, had to be soaked for about a half hour. Did I mention it was really COLD last Saturday? I think my hands recovered from pressing the COLD water out of that blanket...oh, about yesterday. Shale was then hastily pinned out on our bed, and fans were set up and turned on Warp Speed 11, while I paced back and forth muttering, "Dry! Dry!" Ok, it wasn't quite that bad...but almost! But look at that face...so, sooooo worth plunging my hands into ice cold water.
Ok, I have many other FOs to share, but they will have to wait till next week. Here are a few more pictures of the greatest FO of all. Enjoy!

I have one picture left...it is the best of all, IMO. It absolutely brings tears to my eyes. I was kind of jockeying for position amidst several happy family members and didn't think I'd got a good shot till I downloaded it. Beautiful mother, beautiful two-hour old baby... Welcome to the world, Austin. A whole lot of people love you very much.
